Protecting a New Home

Why Purchase a Radon-Resistant Home?

Tried-and-true methods

You can lower your radon-gas levels by an average of 50% when employing easy and affordable methods, while also potentially lowering levels of other soil gases and decreasing moisture problems.

Save your hard-earned money

Make your home more energy efficient.

Cost effective

Radon-resistant construction is notably cheaper than fixing radon issues that you may have later on.

What Can You Do?

Gas permeable layer

This is a 10-cm layer of clean, uniform gravel that is laid under the slab or foundation system of your house to let soil gas circulate freely. Do not use this method if you have a crawlspace.

Sealing and caulking

Seal any and all openings, fissures, crevices, cracks, etc. in your concrete foundation to decrease the entry of soil gas into your home

Plastic sheeting

Placed on top of your home's gas permeable layer and under the foundation slab, plastic sheeting helps prevent the entry of soil gas into your home. If you have a crawlspace, simply place the sheet over the crawlspace floor.

Vent pipe

Take a solid PVC Schedule 40 pipe about 10 cm in diameter and install it vertically from the gravel cover and through the structure's conditioned space and roof to vent radon and other NORM off into the atmosphere.

Junction box

This makes it easier to wire and install a vent fan.

Why Purchase a Radon-Resistant Home?

Start from the ground up

The basement and first floor of a home are where radon concentrations will be at their highest. Geographically, radon levels across South Africa will vary depending on any given area's natural geological composition and history of human industrial activity. Given, however, its extensive mining history and the inevitable involvement of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM), South Africa is more susceptible to high levels of radon exposure than other countries

Use radon-mitigating construction methods

In addition to the methods above, CareTac can consult your or your developer on how to minimize your radon risk, including through the installation of a radon ventilation system.

Test, test, test

Radon testing in South Africa, while not yet legislatively mandated, is still vitally important. Areas such as Gauteng, the Western and Eastern Capes, and KwaZulu-Natal are known to have high radon levels. You can order your radon test kit or Airthings radon monitors from CareTac, right on our site.

If radon levels are high, don't wait, mitigate

If your radon measurements show 140 Bq/m3 or higher, you should immediately look to mitigate your risk. CareTac can provide risk management consultation to help in the process.
